From Inspiration to Design: How a Beaded Piece Comes to Life

If you read my first blog post, you already know how much I love beading and how every design tells a story. But something I get asked often is, “How do you come up with your designs?”
The truth is, every beaded piece begins with inspiration. Sometimes it’s a season, a holiday, or a favorite color. Other times it’s something much more personal—an animal someone loves, a favorite sports team, a meaningful symbol, or a memory tied to a special moment in life.
For me, the design process almost always starts with the focal bead. The focal bead is the heart of the piece. It’s the element that immediately catches your eye and sets the tone for the entire design. Once that bead is chosen, everything else begins to fall into place—the colors, the supporting beads, the spacing, and the overall balance of the piece.
One of the focal beads I have sold the most is the cardinal bead with the saying “I am always with you.” Cardinals hold deep meaning for many people. They are often seen as a reminder of loved ones who are no longer physically with us but remain present in spirit. Because of that symbolism, these pieces are especially meaningful. When someone chooses a cardinal design, it’s often tied to a memory, a loved one, or a comforting reminder that they are never truly alone.
Designing those pieces is incredibly special to me because I know they carry a deeper emotional connection. It’s not just an accessory—it becomes a small, everyday reminder of someone who is loved and remembered.
Once the focal bead is chosen, I begin selecting the silicone beads that will support the design. Silicone beads are one of my favorite materials to work with because they offer both beauty and durability. They are soft, lightweight, and incredibly versatile, making them perfect for everyday accessories like keychains, wristlets, bag tags, and more.
Most of my designs incorporate 12mm–20mm round silicone beads, which create the perfect balance between subtle and bold. Smaller beads can add softness and flow, while larger beads create visual impact. Mixing sizes, colors, and textures helps bring the design to life while still allowing the focal bead to remain the star of the story.
Color selection is another important part of the process. Sometimes a design calls for earthy neutrals that feel calm and natural. Other times bold colors bring energy and personality to the piece. The color palette helps frame the focal bead and enhances the meaning behind it.
As the beads come together, the piece begins to take shape—almost like putting together the chapters of a story. Every bead plays a role. Every color adds emotion. Every design choice helps create something that feels intentional and personal.
That’s one of the things I love most about beading. No two pieces are exactly the same because no two stories are exactly the same.
Whether it’s a cardinal that represents a loved one, a sports bead that celebrates a favorite team, or a symbol that reflects someone’s faith or passions, each design is created with purpose.
At the end of the process, what remains isn’t just a beaded accessory—it’s a small piece of someone’s story, strung together bead by bead.
