Why I Love Beading: Creating Stories One Bead at a Time
Share
Let’s talk about beading—because for me, it’s so much more than just putting beads on a string.
One of the things I love most about beaded designs is the incredible freedom they allow. Beading isn’t restrictive. There’s no single “right” way to do it, and that’s what makes it so special. Every piece can be personal, meaningful, and completely unique.
Silicone beads, in particular, open the door to endless creativity. They’re soft yet durable, lightweight yet strong, and incredibly versatile. Because of that flexibility, they allow me to design items that aren’t just beautiful, but functional and comfortable for everyday life. The color options alone are enough to spark inspiration. There are hundreds of solid silicone colors available, ranging from earthy neutrals to bold brights and everything in between. On top of that, there are thousands of design beads—patterns, textures, and specialty styles that add personality and depth to each piece.
Most of my designs use 12mm–20mm round beads, which are the perfect sizes for mixing, matching, and layering. Smaller beads create subtle, clean looks, while larger beads add impact and presence. Together, they allow for balance, flow, and intentional design.
At the heart of many designs is the focal bead—the centerpiece of the story. This bead is often what sets the tone and gives the piece its meaning. It might represent a favorite animal, a beloved sports team, a character that brings joy, or a flower tied to a memory. Sometimes it’s an inspirational quote, a holiday symbol, or a religious element that reflects faith, tradition, or celebration.
The focal bead is where the story begins. Everything else—the colors, the spacing, the supporting beads—flows from that central element. It’s what draws the eye first and what gives the piece its emotional connection. Whether bold or subtle, playful or sentimental, the focal bead anchors the design and makes it truly personal.
What I love most is how beading allows each item to tell a story. A favorite color, a meaningful symbol, a special season of life—every choice matters. When someone chooses a beaded keychain, wristlet, bag tag, or accessory, they’re not just picking colors. They’re choosing something that reflects who they are, what they love, or what they want to remember.
That’s the heart of beading for me. It’s not mass-produced or one-size-fits-all. It’s thoughtful. It’s creative. And it’s personal.
With silicone beads in 12mm–20mm round sizes and a focal bead that tells the story, the possibilities are truly endless—each design strung together with intention, meaning, and heart.
